Links see off Gog Magog in Goddard Cup final
County title goes to the Links
The Links, Newmarket lifted the Goddard Cup with victory over Gog Magog in an evenly-fought final.
Saffron Walden hosted the Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union event, which saw the Gog Magog team eager to make up for their sudden death play-off defeat to Ely City last year.
In the early stages, Gog Magog held the lead in three of the four foursomes matches.
The Links fought back and Jason Evans and Ed Harper overturned a three-hole deficit to beat Steve Jarvis and Chris Fitt 2&1, while captain Ed Dimambro and Alex Day won one up against Tom Williams and Ollie Rust.
In the top match, the Gogs’ Nick Smits and Dave Quinney triumphed 3&2 against Newmarket’s Toby Crisp and Mark Bloxham.
But a comfortable 5&4 win for Matt Hartley and Lee Allen over James Stammers and Neil Hughes saw the Links lead 3-1 at lunch.
In-form Smits was first up for Gogs in the afternoon, and he took on youngster Day, and the Gogs player won 10&8.
But Harper won 2&1 against Jarvis, and Crisp defeated Quinney 3&1.
With Rust and Williams well up in their respective matches, it looked to be heading for a tight finish as there was no more than one shot in any of the other games at the turn.
Bloxham beat Fitt at the 18th hole, and Dimambro won against Hughes on the 16th green.
Stammers fought back from three down to beat Evans 2&1, but despite 5&4 and 6&5 wins for Rust and Williams respectively, the Links ran out 7-5 winners to claim the Goddard Cup.
