Cambridge United announce departures of 11 players – including Paul Digby, Jubril Okedina, George Thomas and Ben Stevenson
The final two remaining members of the ‘Lockdown Legends’ – Paul Digby and Jubril Okedina – are among the 11 players that will be leaving Cambridge United following the expiration of their contracts in June.
The duo, who were part of the 2020/21 promotion-winning squad and also in the starting line-up for the famous FA Cup win against Newcastle United, have amassed more than 350 appearances for the club between them.
However, both will be heading for pastures new following confirmation of the club’s retained and released list.
Also leaving the club at the end of their deals next month will be Jack Stevens, Louis Chadwick, Danny Andrew, George Thomas, Jordan Cousins, Ben Stevenson, Dan Barton and Amaru Kaunda, while Brandon Njoku also confirmed his departure earlier today.
Goalkeeper Marko Marosi and left-back Scott Malone’s short-term contracts with United have already expired, while Gary Gardner’s deal – which still had 12 months left to run – has been mutually cancelled.
Meanwhile, Liam Bennett, Michael Morrison and Sullay Kaikai are also due to be out of contract in June, but the club is currently in discussions with the trio with regards to fresh terms to extend their stays at the Cledara Abbey Stadium into next season.
Kell Watts, James Brophy, Korey Smith, Zeno Ibsen Rossi, Ryan Loft, Shayne Lavery, Mamadou Jobe, James Gibbons, Glenn McConnell and George Hoddle are all under contract for the 2025/26 campaign, when the U’s will be looking to bounce back in League Two following their recent relegation.
Director of football Mark Bonner, who managed both Digby and Okedina during his successful time in the dugout, said: “Relegation brings tough but necessary decisions, and this summer signals the beginning of an important rebuild for us. With Neil Harris now leading us into the new season, there’s a clear sense of purpose and direction as we reshape the squad to compete strongly and grow again.
“We say goodbye to some excellent professionals; individuals who have given their all to the club. In particular, I want to thank Paul Digby for his exceptional commitment and leadership over several seasons. He’s been a true servant to Cambridge United.
“Jubril Okedina also gets a special mention for his role over the past four years – another member of our promotion winning team in 2021.
“We are grateful to all the players departing this summer for their efforts throughout their varied length of service; they depart with our very best wishes for the future.”
