Long Melford bring an end to Histon's winning run
Stutes taste defeat for the first time in 11 games
Histon’s long unbeaten run in the Thurlow Nunn League, Premier Division has been brought to an end.
Lance Key’s side had won nine of their last 10 games, and drawn the other, ahead of their trip to mid-table Long Melford, who lost 5-1 to Ely City in their previous match.
The Stutes almost took the lead through Lee Smith’s 37th-minute free kick that shaved the post, but two minutes later, they were behind.
Scott Sloots shot through a group of players to give Long Melford the lead.
After the break, Histon had the majority of the play but were thwarted by the hosts’ defending.
On 59 minutes, Long Melford doubled their lead as Hassan Ally seized on an error to find the net.
Histon were given hope in the 67th minute as a loose ball was fired into the net by Joe Sutton.
But despite having two efforts cleared off the line, the Stutes were unable to find an equaliser.
Histon are currently third in the table with 65 points, two adrift of third-placed Stowmarket Town. The leaders are Felixstowe & Walton United with 84.
Next up for Histon is a home clash with Wroxham this Saturday (February 24).
