Luke Ryan takes top spot in Cambridgeshire Area Golf Winter Series, second round

Luke Ryan sealed victory in the second round of the Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union Winter Series to set up a shoot-out for the overall title on the final weekend.

At St Ives Golf Club, Ely City’s Ryan fired a round of 74, which included a couple of birdies.

Gog Magog’s Axel Friberg was the last player to come in and had a chance of taking the round, but a couple of poor chips saw him also finish on 74.

It meant that Ryan took the victory on countback, with Friberg claiming the under-21 prize.

Gog Mago’s Josh Austin-Tierney also returned with a score of 74, including one birdie and a number of good short-game saves, and St Neots’ Andy Grimwood was in contention until a bogey on the last put paid to his hopes.

Alex Kephart, of Gog Magog, led the series after the first round, but could only manage 78.

It means a number of players are in with a chance of winning the overall title at St Neots on Sunday, May 9.

Overall standings: 1 Justin Austin-Tierney 33 points, 2 Luke Ryan 31, 3 Alex Kephart 27, 4 Andy Grimwood 22, 5 Owen Davies 18.
