Histon win Eastern Region Women's Football League Division One North season opener against Newmarket Town
Darren Marjoram made a winning start to his tenure as Histon manager at the weekend.
Faced with a tough trip to Newmarket Town in their Eastern Region Women's Football League Division One North season opener, Marjoram watched on as the Stutes ran out 3-1 winners.
Clinical centre-forward Evie Nicholls, who was the division’s joint second highest scorer last term with 19 goals, opened her account for 2025/26 in the 36th minute when she turned the ball in through a crowded penalty box.
Histon remained in the ascendancy heading into the break, only to then be pegged back during the second half when Abbi Griffin converted from the penalty spot after Abbie Corbyn had been fouled inside the box.
The scoreline stayed locked at a goal apiece until the final 10 minutes when the visitors regained their lead. Nicholls’ cross was diverted by Newmarket goalkeeper Dom Szary into the path of Tash Collins, who applied the finishing touch at the back post.
And the outcome was made safe shortly after as Nicholls doubled her tally for the afternoon, showing good composure to get the better of Szary in a one-on-one situation with a chipped finish.
Histon will now seek to back up their day one victory on Sunday (24 August) when they play host to Biggleswade United in their first home encounter of the campaign.
Biggleswade kicked off the new term in style at the weekend courtesy of a 5-0 home win over Colney Heath.
Meanwhile, in the same division, Cambridge City started the season with a narrow 1-0 defeat at home against one of the title favourites in Dunstable Town.
The Lilywhites headed into the contest having suffered back-to-back relegations during the previous two campaigns.
City will hit the road on Sunday when they travel to face Real Bedford Reserves, who opened up with a 3-0 triumph at the expense of Fulbourn Institute Bluebirds.
