Braces help to defeat Woodbridge Town

Matt Green and Max York both scored twice to help book Histon a place in the third round of the FA Vase with a 5-4 win over Woodbridge Town.

Histon took the lead in the 18th minute as Green slammed home a pass from Danny Gould, and when Green was fouled by the keeper, York scored the penalty for 2-0 after 25 minutes.

Woodbridge pulled a goal back, but York restored Histon’s two-goal before half time.

Evan Key slid home the hosts’ fourth after 48 minutes, but Woodbridge reduced the arrears with a penalty four minutes later.

Pat Bexfield was then dismissed for a second yellow card, however Green’s fine finish in the 67th minute made it 5-2.

Woodbridge got a third in the 74th minute, and then Histon keeper Sam Roach produced heroics to deny the visitors from the spot in the 85th minute.

They did get a fourth in stoppage time, when Histon’s Lee Smith was also dismissed for a second yellow card, but the hosts held on for the win.

They will face either Enfield or Leverstock Green at home in the third round, with the tie to be played on December 1.

This Saturday (November 10), Histon are away to Hadleigh United in the Thurlow Nunn League, Premier Division.
