Stutes surge continues

Matt Hayden thumped a hat-trick as Histon maintained their impressive run of form with an 8-0 victory over Fakenham Town.

The Stutes have been in great form since the Christmas period as they pursue a top-three finish and they showed no signs of letting up any time soon against the Norfolk strugglers.

Histon were rampant in the first half, breaking the deadlock after only nine minutes through Hayden.

He doubled his tally four minutes later, and it was 3-0 after 18 minutes as captain Max York struck.

It was 5-0 by the half-hour as Evan Key and Lee Smith were both on target.

There was a long wait in the second half before more goals arrived, but the final three came in quick succesion.

Substitute James Carman made it 6-0 after 85 minutes and then Hayden completed his hat-trick on 90 minutes.

And there was still time for Shaun Jenkins to add an eighth.

The result, as well as doing wonders for their goal difference, moved Histon to within five points of third place and three points off fourth-placed Brantham Athletic, who they face away this Saturday (February 10).

Cambridge City’s frustrating start to 2018 continued last weekend.

The Lilywhites were due to be hosting Barton Rovers in the Evo-Stik League, South East Division at Westwood Road.

But they suffered another home postponement because of the pitch.
