Cambridge United announce departure of former Aston Villa and Birmingham City midfielder Gary Gardner

Cambridge United have announced the departure of Gary Gardner by mutual consent.

Despite joining the club on a free transfer from Birmingham City last summer, the midfielder will leave the Cledara Abbey Stadium having not made a single appearance for the club.

The 32-year-old picked up an Achilles injury soon after signing for the U’s before also suffering with a toe complaint that prevented him from featuring for the entire 2024/25 season.

The former England Under-21 international still had another 12 months to run on his deal at Cambridge, but both parties have now agreed to part ways.

Director of football Mark Bonner said: “Gary joined us last summer with great potential, and it’s disappointing for all parties that things haven’t worked out as we had hoped.

“Despite the setbacks, Gary has always shown professionalism and we are grateful to him for his efforts.

“After thoughtful discussions, we’ve mutually agreed to part ways. It’s a situation that didn’t unfold as planned, but feel this is best way forward for all involved. We wish him the very best for the future.”

Gardner is the second player to have his departure from the club confirmed today after striker Brandon Njoku.
