Victory on the road at Fylde

New co-captain Mike Ayrton touched down the final try as Cambridge started their National League One season with a 25-12 win at Fylde.

Cambridge opened the scoring through a Ben Penfold penalty, but the hosts went ahead when hooker Tom Burtonwood touched down after a driving maul from the forwards.

Cambridge replied with a try out wide from lock Rob Conquest, and it remained 8-5 at half time.

The visitors went further ahead when full-back Joe Green picked up a loose ball inside his own 22 to run the length of the field to score, and Penfold kicked the conversion.

Fylde were awarded a penalty try after scrum-half Cameron Keenan deliberately intercepted a Greg Nicholls pass, with the Cambridge man also picking up a yellow card.

But Jack Green kicked a drop goal for Cambridge to make it 18-12.

The final say went to Ayrton, who was named co-captain with Ean Griffiths last week, as he touched down in the corner, with the extras making it 25-12.

And there were also wins for Cambridge’s second team, 47-40 at Coventry, and the third team, 36-12 at the Renegades.

Cambridge are at home to Loughborough Students this Saturday (September 9).
