Miranda Brain clinches victory in the Cambs and Hunts Women’s Golf Championship
Miranda Brain clinched victory in the Cambs and Hunts Women’s Golf Championship at Ely City Golf Club.
The Gog Magog Golf Club player headed the list of qualifiers in the three-day event, with a two-round total of 148, having equalled the course record of 70 in the second round to win the 36-hole gross trophy.
Playing partner Ella Mason, of the host club, had two solid rounds of 74 and 76 to secure the nett prize, while promising juniors Olivia Wynne and Lila-Belle Nacca produced some excellent golf to qualify for the match-play competition.
In the quarter finals, Brain faced Ely City’s Emma Pennington, and continued her good form from the first day by winning 5&4.
The Links’ Marcella Tuttle won 5&4 against Bourn’s Nacca, while there was a tight battle between The Links’ Jackie Ewing and Ely City’s Laura Todd, with Ewing taking a one up victory with a birdie on the 18th.
The last quarter final saw Mason take on Bourn’s Wynne, who was competing in her first county championship. Wynne made par on the 14th, 15th and 16th holes to level the scores, but Mason triumphed on the 17th and 18th to earn a two-up victory.
Brain secured a comfortable 5&3 victory over Tuttle in the semi-finals, while Mason progressed to the last two by beating Ewing on the 18th hole.
In the final, Brain took an early lead with par on the first and increased her lead on the fifth when Mason went through the back of the green and missed her putt.
Mason fought back with a par on the sixth, but a chip in from off the green at the seventh saw Brain restore her two-hole lead.
Brain reached the turn with a three-hole lead after winning the eighth, and after nine, 10, 11 and 12 were halved, the Gog Magog player extended her advantage on the 13th.
Brain was then crowned county champion by closing out the match on the 15th hole for a 4&3 victory.
