Old Leysians and Foxton Granta chalk up victories during Division One encounters

Milan Mniszko starred with bat and ball for Old Leysians (245) in their 34-run victory over Histon in Division One of the Whitings LLP Cambs & Hunts Premier League on Saturday.

The all-rounder came to the crease with his side struggling to a degree on 33-2. However, while the wickets continued to tumble at the other end, Mniszko took the game to Histon’s bowling attack.

With support from Jason Simon (58), Mniszko remained unbeaten throughout the Old Leysians’ innings with a score of 118 runs from 125 deliveries.

Openers Thomas Cox (25) and Ric Bentley (13) were the only other members of the home side’s batting line-up to produce double-figure knocks, while John Turner (4-44) and Ben Leach (3-62) were the pick of Histon’s bowlers.

In reply, Histon appeared to be relatively comfortable at 167-5 but the subsequent dismissals of captain Ed Hyde (63) and Fergus Hughes (50) ended their hopes of chasing down the target.

The visitors’ tail was mopped up by Mniszko, who finished nine overs with figures of 4-47 to wrap up a man-of-the-match performance.

Adam Newman was also impressive for Old Leysians with 3-30, while Joseph Gunn-Roberts contributed 2-40.

Old Leysians, who have been the fourth top performing team in the red-ball segment of the season, will go in search of another victory on Saturday (July 22) at home against second-from-bottom March Town.

Histon, meanwhile, will have home advantage on the same day against basement side Newmarket.

Elsewhere, Foxton Granta (192-6) posted their fifth red-ball victory of the season thanks to Saturday’s 64-run triumph over Southill Park (107).

Having been put into bat first by their visitors, Foxton Granta got off to a positive start courtesy of their opening pair of Adam Webster (20) and Douglas Rice (54), who combined to put on a total of 74 runs for the first wicket.

Meanwhile, lower down the order some useful runs were added by Ashley Clark (32) and Johnny Atkinson, the latter remaining unbeaten on 35 by the time that the 55th over was reached.

Like the hosts, Southill Park also made a decent start in their reply but the wickets started to tumble and they ended up someway short of the target.

Alex Fullarton (4-19) was the pick of the bowlers for Foxton Granta, who are on the road away at Blunham on Saturday (July 22).

Meanwhile, Cambridge St Giles (75) suffered a batting collapse during their 115-run defeat at the hands of Blunham (190-9) last weekend.

However, Pande’s knock of 26 in reply was the best that St Giles could muster as they were bowled out in one ball shy of 29 overs.

St Giles, who have chalked up five victories from their eight red-ball outings in 2023, will aim to bounce back on Saturday (July 22) when they travel to Bedfordshire to face Southill Park.
