Cambridge United head coach Garry Monk ‘frustrated’ to see a ‘couple’ of transfers fall through this week
Cambridge United head coach Garry Monk has revealed that a ‘couple’ of deals to bring in new players fell through earlier in the week.
The U’s boss has made no secret of his desire to strengthen the squad during the January transfer window, particularly in attack and midfield.
And following the arrival of goalkeeper Marko Marosi earlier this month, Monk thought that he had two more players through the door – only for the moves to fall by the wayside.
“We know we need to recruit and we’re trying to do that as quickly as possible,” said Monk.
“We’re unfortunate this week that a couple were pretty much across the line and then there’s a couple of issues outside of our control and it hasn’t happened.
“I don’t really want to go into specifics because I don’t think it’s fair on the players themselves.
“But they were literally across the line and then you have to make a decision. A lot of the stuff is out of our control and I’m frustrated with that – we all are because we’ve worked incredibly hard to get to those points.
“It’s hard for us as a club anyway regardless of the situation we’re in and where we’re at. Even in the summer it’s hard.
“It is what it is and it happens at every club across the country, but we’re having some really good conversations and some in-depth stuff and good contact with players and clubs.
“We’re getting quite far down the line with some of them so I’m pretty hopeful that there will be some movement in the coming days. We’re working with urgency and we’ve done that from the very beginning.”
In terms of the possibility of some of those ‘good conversations’ coming to fruition before tomorrow’s deadline ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime clash against Mansfield Town, Monk added: “We’re working with urgency and we’re getting our bit right and I’m hopeful over the coming days.
“Who knows? It’s highly unlikely before Mansfield but this window works bizarrely, more than any other window. We’ll keep plugging away and working with that urgency.
“Hopefully it’s sooner rather than later – we all want that, the club wants that and our fans want that. I can assure them that everything the club can possibly do, they’re doing.”
