Norwich City’s decision to recall Vicente Reyes left Cambridge United head coach Garry Monk ‘surprised’ and ‘disappointed’
Head coach Garry Monk has admitted that Norwich City’s decision to recall Vicente Reyes from his loan spell at Cambridge United caught him by surprise.
Having been installed as Monk’s number one goalkeeper at the start of the season, the 21-year-old went on to make a total of 23 appearances between the posts for the U’s.
However, the Chilean lost his place to Jack Stevens after the 2-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic on Boxing Day and spent the following three League One fixtures warming the bench.
Nevertheless, Monk did not expect his Championship parent club to trigger the recall option in the season-long loan deal.
“I wasn’t expecting that at all. We can’t control that, so we were a bit surprised by it. In football that’s how it happens sometimes,” said Monk.
“We wish wish Vinnie all the best. For a young ‘keeper he’s done fantastic and he did particularly well to come into another step up for him (after Forest Green loan spell last season).
“Overall he’s handled himself well and I’m sure Norwich will be thankful for the development with him. He’s contributed really well so it’s a disappointment to see him go back.”
In terms of the remaining goalkeeping options, youngster Louis Chadwick looks set to be promoted to the role of back-up for this weekend’s trip to Blackpool.
And it remains to be seen if Monk will strengthen that particular department before the transfer window shuts.
He added: “It’s like everywhere, we need as much strength in positions as possible.
“It’s (goalkeeping position) not the priority but of course those conversations have been had and like anything, as a manager if you get the opportunity to bring somebody in that you think can help and ultimately improve on what you’ve got, we’re always going to advocate for that.
“We’ve spoken about every position and if something comes along that we think is doable and makes us better, then we’ll do that in any position.”
