Cambridge United attacker Sullay Kaikai encouraged to build upon performance and goal during Bolton Wanderers clash
Cambridge United head coach Garry Monk is hoping that Sullay Kaikai’s last-minute heroics against Bolton Wanderers will serve as ‘kick into his belief system’.
The attacker has struggled to force his way into Monk’s starting line-up on a regular basis this season, with last night’s 1-1 draw only the second time this term that he has completed 90 minutes in a League One fixture.
And he marked the occasion in style with a late headed equaliser to rescue the 10-man U’s a point at the Cledara Abbey Stadium.
Now, Monk has called on the Sierra Leone international to use that good feeling to produce those types of a performances on a more regular basis.
“SK has the ability for a higher level but for whatever reasons it hasn’t always happened,” said Monk.
“Maybe it’s the consistency of SK, that’s what we’ve spoken about with him because we know what he’s capable of and we’re always demanding and pushing him to believe in himself. I think it’s more a belief thing in himself, and then a consistency thing on top of that.
“I’m delighted for him. We know there’s a big player in there, we’re working hard with him and tonight should give him even more confidence to try and produce it on a regular basis.
“I was pleased he got his goal tonight because his work rate was unbelievable, just like everyone else.
“Hopefully that is a kick into his belief system and he can try to produce those type of performances on a more consistent basis.”
