Cambridge United reunion potentially on the cards for Portsmouth defender Michael Morrison

Head coach Mark Bonner has refused to rule out the possibility of bringing Michael Morrison back to Cambridge United this month.

The Portsmouth centre-back rose through the ranks at the Abbey Stadium, making more than 100 appearances for the club during the mid-2000s before being sold to Leicester City for an undisclosed fee.

The 34-year-old went on to establish himself as a Championship defender, turning out for the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic, Birmingham City and Reading before dropping back into Sky Bet League One with Pompey during the summer.

He has featured on 28 occasions so far for the south coast side, but recent speculation has suggested that he could be in line for a return to United before the window closes.

And while Bonner stressed that a deal was not close, it was one he suggested could yet come to fruition.

“We’re looking for all sorts of players at the moment and Michael is obviously one that I know well,” he said.

“He has a connection to the club so I don’t want to shut that one down completely.

“But at the same time until anything is done or impossible we can’t really say anything more than that.

“It’s a potential option for us as we look to try and strengthen across the whole squad, but certainly not something that is really close to happening.”

Morrison was recently asked by Portsmouth News about the reports linking him with United, to which he responded: “Cambridge is somewhere special to me, I came up through the youth team there. I’m from Haverhill originally, only 20 minutes outside Cambridge.

“I know the people that are there and it’s somewhere I came up through. It played a massive part in my life, obviously it has a special place. Possibly I will go back there one day, I’ll have to see.

“But I am contracted to Pompey until the end of the season. I signed for a year and have really enjoyed playing in front of the Pompey fans.

“Obviously the beginning of the season was great. We are in a bit of a tough patch now, but are working really hard to get through that. We’ll see where that goes after this season.”
