Newnham College take the women’s headship of the 2022 Lent Bumps
Newnham College Boat Club have taken the women’s headship of the 2022 Lent Bumps.
Having started the week in third place in Division One, after the rest day for the top tier on day one of the event, Newnham wasted little time in getting going, bumping Jesus at the Plough to move up to second place.
There was no idling from Newnham as on day two of racing they went to the top of the division.
With a tactical call just outside of Ditton Corner, they pushed on to bump Downing in the spinning zone at the top of the reach.
Newnham then rowed over on the next two days to clinch the Headship.
After being bumped by Newnham, Downing and Jesus held on to second and third respectively, while Emmanuel rowed over all week for fourth place.
Caius were some of the biggest climbers as they went from ninth to fifth, earning their blades.
Pembroke started where they finished, in sixth, after bumping once then being bumped.
Lady Margaret dropped from fifth to seventh, while Trinity Hall climbed from 11th to eighth. Clare went from eighth to 10th, but bumped Churchill on the last day to end up in ninth.
Lady Margaret rowed over to keep the men’s Headship.
There was a change in second place though, as on day one Caius bumped Pembroke to become the lead chasers of Lady Margaret, althought they were unable to wrestle away the crown.
First and Third fell from fourth at the start of the week to sixth, being passed by Downing, and by Jesus, who climbed from eighth to fifth.
Magdalene were also among the big climbers in the top division, going from 10th up to seventh.
Trinity Hall had a bump on day one up to seventh, but after rowing over on day two, were bumped on days three and four to finish in eighth.
Robinson were the biggest fallers, going from sixth to 10th, while completing the top 10 were King’s who dropped a place on day one, rowed over on days two and three, and then bumped Robinson on the fourth and final day to finish where they started.
In the men’s divisions, Homerton were one of the biggest climbers of the week. They started off in 13th in Division Two, but by the culmination of proceedings had gone up to seventh.
