Old Leysians have promotion aspirations in Cambs and Hunts Premier League
Old Leysians will trust in the same nucleus of players that have carried them up the leagues as they bid to mount a challenge for the Whiting & Partners Cambs and Hunts Premier League, Division Two title.
The side is formed of former students or staff of The Leys school, and they have developed into quite a force in recent seasons, making progress from the CCA structure.
“We’ve only ever had two people physically leave the club in the entire existence of it,” said skipper John Welch.
“Generally, it’s just a lot of good mates playing cricket which is fantastic. It’s actually proved a real success point of the club in that people want to play and it makes availability better as we go on.
“It’s been really beneficial and long may it continue – as long as not too many people get married in the next two years where all those Saturdays get taken up where everyone ends up at the wedding then we will be OK.”
“It means that they just trust in their own and each other’s abilities, so prep for the new campaign has been minimal.
“We’ve approached this season like we have every other, which is little preparation as far as any training or anything.
“We’re just going to get stuck in as soon as the season starts.
“We haven’t done too much of a pre-season but everyone seems incredibly excited about it all and just ready to enjoy each other’s company again and play some cricket.”
With the same core of the squad as the last four seasons, Old Leysians have a very clear target, especially after taking victory in last year’s truncated season.
“We’re just hoping to go out there and win the league,” said Welch. “We have got the Tucker Two trophy, but unfortunately we can’t claim that as an official title win, I don’t think – but our name will be on the trophy.
“We want to try to win the league and get promoted again.”
Old Leysians are away to Castor & Ailsworth on Saturday (May 1) on the first weekend of the season.
Foxton II also get their Division Two campaign under way, at Waresley.
Joining Sawston & Babraham II in Division Three are Burwell & Exning II, who start their season away at Wisbech Town II.
