Cambridge United remain in the hunt for a trophy after victory over Maidenhead United
Cambridge United Women remain in the hunt for silverware following Sunday’s 1-0 victory at Maidenhead United.
The one-goal triumph has seen the U’s advance through into the semi-finals of the FA Women’s League Plate competition, with the draw yet to have been made.
The two sides traded chances throughout an entertaining first half in Berkshire.
Isabella Simmons and Zoe Wood both went close for United, while at the other end Lauren Webb made one particular eye-catching save of note.
The visitors started to take more control in the second half and they were eventually rewarded with a 68th-minute winning goal.
Leading scorer Alysha Stojko-Down was the hero, slamming home from the penalty spot after she had been fouled inside the box.
Hosting Maidenhead, who play at an equivalent level to United, applied some pressure late on but they were unable to make the breakthrough.
United have joined Derby County, Barnsley and Exeter City in the final four of the tournament.
Darren Marjoram’s side will switch their focus back to their Division One South East commitments on Sunday (4 February) when they travel to face top-of-the-table AFC Wimbledon.
