Battle to the wire in Wheeler Salver

Owen Davies clinched his first Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union title by claiming victory in the Wheeler Salver at Gog Magog.

On the Old Course, the former county captain, who guided Cambs to the Anglian League title in 2013, took on 18-year-old Callum Brookes, of Saffron Walden.

It was the first appearance in the final for both players, and first blood when to Brampton Park’s Davies, who was one up after three holes.

Brookes struck back with birdies on the fourth and fifth to take the lead, and he was two up after a birdie at the seventh, but Davies landed a birdie on the eighth to reduce the arrears.

Davies was two down at the turn, but he won the 10th and 14th to make the match all square.

As the wind picked up, Brookes conceded the 15th in fading light after Davies’ close putt for birdie.

After 16 and 17 were halved, Davies make a solid par on the last hole to win the Wheeler Salver, which was his first individual county title.
