Cambridge City slip to late defeat during Isthmian League North Division clash at Maldon & Tiptree

Fresh from picking up their first league victory of the new season last time out, Cambridge City were beaten 2-1 at Maldon & Tiptree on Saturday.

A 3-1 win over Mildenhall Town on bank holiday Monday had got the Lilywhites off the winning mark in the Pitching In Isthmian League North Division.

But they were unable to follow that up with another triumph in Essex, where two late goals from the hosts secured the three points.

George Smith got City off to a positive start at Park Drive with the game’s opening goal in the 17th minute. It was the striker’s fifth goal since joining the club in the summer and the third game in a row in which he has found the net.

And it appeared to be the match-winning moment until six minutes from time when Matthew Price equalised for Maldon & Tiptree, who went on to steal the victory in stoppage time thanks to Kien Connolly’s goal.

Jamie Cureton’s City will look to bounce back on Sunday (8 September) when they host Kings Langley in the FA Trophy before travelling to Waltham Abbey for a league fixture on Tuesday (10 September).
