Shelford Rugby Club leave it late to get the better of Tring in Regional 1 South East

Shelford left it late to record a dramatic 26-22 victory on the road at second-placed Tring on Saturday.

The result has moved the Peacocks in third place to within three points of their hosts, while Regional 1 South East leaders Westcombe Park are 18 points better off.

Two tries – one of which was converted – and a penalty saw Tring race into a 15-0 lead but Shelford soon responded via a Louie Tang try that went unconverted.

Tring went on to extend their advantage with a second converted try of the afternoon but Shelford kept themselves in contention a minute before half-time with a penalty try that was awarded because of an intentional knock-on.

Within five minutes of the second half getting under way Shelford cut the deficit to three points at 22-19 when Joe Gill’s try was converted by Lewis Cracknell.

The scoreline remained that way until three minutes from time when Shelford got themselves in front for the first time.

Their fourth try came courtesy of a pick and go from Harry Rogerson, with Harvey Taylor doing the honours with the boot.

Tring applied a large amount of pressure in the minutes that remained but the Shelford defence held firm to collect all five points.

Will Cotterill’s men will hope to make home advantage count on Saturday (December 10) when they entertain eighth-placed Harpenden at the Davey Field.
