Shelford Rugby Club beaten on opening day of new Regional 1 South East season by Letchworth Garden City

Shelford started the new Regional 1 South East season on Saturday with a 38-21 defeat at Letchworth Garden City.

A couple of penalties from Lewis Cracknell got the visiting Peacocks off the mark in Hertfordshire.

That was followed by a try from Louie Tang – converted by Cracknell – before Callum Hall dotted down.

Another penalty from the boot of Cracknell rounded off the scoring for Shelford, but at the other end a Letchworth side containing former Cambridge winger Kwaku Asiedu proved to be too strong.

Shelford will now lick their wounds and then go again on Saturday (14 September) when they welcome Hertford to the Davey Field.

Hertford opened up their 2024/25 campaign last weekend with a thumping 62-7 home defeat at the hands of Oundle.

Meanwhile, in the Counties 1 Eastern Counties, Shelford II started the new term with a 23-16 victory at the expense of Bury St Edmunds II.

In the same division, Cantabrigian went down to a 48-3 defeat on the road at North Walsham II.

On Saturday (14 September) Shelford II head to Newmarket and Cantabrigian host Norwich.
