Cambridge United set to be reunited with Michael Morrison following Portsmouth departure
Recently-appointed Portsmouth manager John Mousinho has confirmed that Michael Morrison is to leave the club – and he expects the experienced defender to return to Cambridge United.
Earlier this week U’s head coach Mark Bonner refused to rule out a move for the experienced centre-back, who started his professional career at the Abbey Stadium before going on to play for the likes of Leicester City, Sheffield Wednesday, Reading and Charlton Athletic.
He joined Pompey in the summer and has gone on to feature on 28 occasions for the south coast club, but his absence from today’s squad that beat Exeter City resulted in heightened speculation about his future.
And Mousinho has now revealed that the Haverhill-raised 34-year-old is likely to be heading back to United.
He told The Portsmouth News: “It looks like Michael will be departing – and it’s in the best interest of both the player and the club.
“We’re not going to stand in his way if he can get a longer-term deal elsewhere.
“It’s a conversation we had, I think on Thursday with the club, and we’ll look to try and replace him if possible. As it stands, I think we’ll shake hands and go from there. It looks that way (a return to Cambridge).
“It’s a family move for him. That’s fine and you have to take that into account. When you get to that stage in your career, I think there are certain things you obviously have to look at and take care off and that’s absolutely fine.”
