Cambridge City Hockey Club’s men’s and women’s sections post positive results

Cambridge City are joint leaders of the Vitality England Hockey Women’s Midlands Conference following their 3-1 win on the road at Belper.

All three of City’s goals in Derbyshire came from corner deflections, the first of which was scored by Emily McStea.

Quickfire goals from Evie Younger and May Busher stretched City’s lead and meant that despite losing McStea to a green card and Miriam Marti-Palet to the sin bin, the hosts’ goal was nothing more than a consolation.

Elsewhere, in the East Women’s League Premier Division, Cambridge City II played out a 0-0 stalemate with Harleston Magpies, while Cambridge City III put four points between themselves and the relegation zone thanks to a 2-1 win at Dereham.

Goals from Katie Gibson and Anita Nicholls earned City all three points in Norfolk.

Cambridge City IV are up to fourth in the East Women’s League Division 2 North West courtesy of their 5-1 derby triumph at Cambridge South III.

An early brace from Abbey Cotton provided City with the perfect start, which they went on to use as a platform for further goals from Becky Hayward, Amber Smith and Holly Radcliffe.

In the same division, Cambridge City V were held to a 2-2 draw during their encounter against second-from-bottom Long Sutton.

Sarah Lambert and Laurel Tully bagged the goals for eighth-placed City.

Tully was also on target for Women’s Over-35 team as they lost 6-2 to Bishop’s Stortford in the Masters Over-35 National Cup.

Meanwhile, bottom-of-the-table Cambridge City held England Hockey Men’s Division 1 North leaders Bowdon to a 1-1 draw at Wilberforce Road.

Dilip Goyal fired in City’s goal off the post and they looked to be heading for an unlikely victory until two minutes from time when the away side’s player-coach Simon Egerton picked out the bottom right hand corner.

Chances went begging for Cambridge City II as they played out a 0-0 draw with Cambridge University in the East Men’s League Premier Division.

Up the other end of the pitch, goalkeeper Joel Cutmore was named City’s Player of the Match as he kept the team’s first clean sheet of the season.

A level below in the East Men’s League Division 1, Cambridge City III were on the wrong end of a 4-3 scoreline at St Neots, while Cambridge City IV are still awaiting their first victory of the campaign after drawing 2-2 with City of Peterborough III in the East Men’s League Division 2 North West.

Two penalty corners from Dave Madden saw City pick up their second point of the season.

In the East Men’s League Division 3 North West, Cambridge City VI recorded a 4-0 home win over Wisbech Town III. Father-and-son duo Nigel and Ollie Gadsby were both on target for City alongside further goals from Bill Davison and Zac Earl.
