Cambridge City confirm agreement to sign prolific striker Mikey Salako after Herne Bay departure
Mikey Salako has agreed to become Cambridge City’s first signing of the summer.
The striker will arrive at the FWD-IP Community Stadium following a prolific spell with Isthmian League South East Division side Herne Bay.
Having joined Bay from Maldon & Tiptree shortly after the start of the 2023/24 season, Salako went on to score 27 goals across 38 appearances that term.
Higher-league offers came the following summer, but the forward remained at Winch’s Field and he went on to add a further 23 goals to his tally during what was a tough campaign for Bay.
However, earlier this week the Kent-based club announced Salako’s departure following the expiration of his contract and it has now been revealed that he will link up with Jamie Cureton’s Lilywhites.
Cureton wrote on social media: “Delighted to get Mickey in. I have known him for a while and he’s someone I have wanted to work with. I’m sure everyone at the club will enjoy watching him play.”
Meanwhile, following confirmation of his Bay exit, Salako said: “After much thought, I have decided to depart from the club to pursue new opportunities closer to home.
“I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who makes this club special - the staff, volunteers, media team and, of course, the incredible Herne Bay faithful. Your support and dedication never go unnoticed.
“I want to also add a mention to the new manager, Liam Friend. He's been instrumental to my success at the club, both on and off the pitch. I wish him the very best of luck with his new role.
“This club will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for everything.”
Player-boss Liam Friend added: “Mikey's actions over the last weeks really do back up his words to the fans. He truly does love the people and the club.
“His performances and goals mean he will always be welcome back to Herne Bay.
“From both myself as a team-mate and a manager, I would like to send a massive thank you to Mikey from everyone at the club. We wish him all the best as he moves to a club closer to home.”
Salako, who won the Supporters’ and Manager’s Player of the Year awards during his time at Bay, has also previously turned out for the likes of Brightlingsea Regent, Basildon United, Hullbridge Sports, Corinthian-Casuals, Tooting & Mitcham United, Walton & Hersham and Bowers & Pitsea.
