Quarterback James Horne stars in Cambridgeshire Cats win over Essex Spartans in British American Football Association League
Cambridgeshire Cats have completed the double over Essex Spartans with a 55-0 in the British American Football Association, Division One.
Having beaten the Spartans 40-25 earlier in the season, the Cats were optimistic of getting another victory, but the Essex side went into the game on a high after a win over Wembley Stallions the previous week.
The Cats made a fast start and did not let up, scoring on the first three drives of the game while holding the Spartans to three-and-outs with some crushing plays from defensive end Callum Laing.
One of the major highlights of the match was Cats quarterback James Horne, who completed 19 of 22 passes for 319 yards and seven touchdowns.
Cats head coach Andy Whiteoak said: “The Essex Spartans were a real challenge in our first game in April. That meant it was key for us to respect the momentum they were bringing into this game.
“I am really proud of how the Cats stayed focused and made a statement on the field while maintaining professionalism.”
Horne added: “The first game against Essex was a wake up call as to how much work we still had to put in as a team.
“We all pulled together to get the edge and it showed on Sunday: the hours of practice and film study set us up to show how effective this team can be when we put it all together and play a complete game.”
Cats defensive coordinator Ben Abbott said: “I am very proud of everyone who stepped on the field: we really took the game to them and adjusted to a very well drilled Essex team who have shown they are a good outfit for Division One football.
“Hopefully this win gives us the confidence we need to take on the division leaders, the London Hornets, in a few weeks’ time.”
