Sawston & Babraham continue East Anglian Premier League title push with victory over Saffron Walden

Sawston & Babraham (316-6 declared) have continued to close the gap on the Thurlow Nunn East Anglian Premier League summit following Saturday’s 87-run victory over Saffron Walden (229).

Having racked up back-to-back wins over Copdock & Old Ipswichian and Swardeston, the Rams went into last weekend’s home encounter sitting 21 points behind league-leading Mildenhall.

But after Dan Heath’s side chalked up a third win a row for the first time this term, Mildenhall’s advantage at the top has been cut to 16 points with six matches remaining.

Batting first against Walden, opener Wayne White (103) set the tone with a century that featured nine fours and one maximum.

And lower down the order the likes of Lee Thomason (47 not out) and Ben Clilverd (37) both sped up the scoring as their knocks came from 32 and 24 deliveries respectively.

Faced with a daunting total, Walden never threatened to get anywhere near their target during the chase.

Sawston & Babraham took wickets at regular intervals as Mark Smith (4-80) and Jack Beaumont (2-47) showed good form.

Heath’s third-placed men will continue their title charge on Saturday (10 August) in Norfolk away at a Great Witchingham side that may include former England spin-bowler Monty Panesar within their ranks. Witchingham are seventh in the EAPL standings.
