Ramsey were victorious in the Paul Daw Memorial Trophy at Gog Magog Golf Club.

Held on the Old Course, the competition was inaugurated last year in memory of the late Paul Daw, who started the Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union Friendly Golf.

It was set up in the early 1990s for new clubs finding it difficult to arrange matches with established clubs. He also formed junior leagues and senior competitions.

After Daw's death three years ago, CAGU took over the Friendly Golf competitions and leagues, which were renamed CAGU Inter Club.

There were 30 teams of four players from 14 clubs entered in the Paul Daw Memorial Trophy, including a team from CAGU boys and Gog Magog ladies, with a handicap limit of 20.

Gog Magog C were the first team to tee-off, and they recorded a score of 88 stableford points from the best two scores on each hole from the team of four. It included 48 on the front nine, and 40 coming home.

An hour later though, county A team player Craig Thorburn led Ramsey to 91 points, making up 49 on the last nine.

The team of four got 11 birdies between them, including eight points on the par five 14th.

Nine-handicapper John Mynott led Ely City C, who raced to the turn in 46 points. They continued their good form on the back nine with 45, only to lose out on the team championship to Ramsey on a card play-off, decided on the best back nine holes.

Paul’s wife Marguerite presented the Ramsey GC team with the magnificent trophy after welcoming speeches by the Gog Magog lady captain Keren Williams and county president David Orwell.
