Vicente Reyes – Cambridge United’s on-loan goalkeeper from Norwich City – is relishing first senior Chile call-up for World Cup qualifiers against Brazil and Colombia

Vicente Reyes is relishing the prospect of linking up with the senior Chile national squad for the first time.

Cambridge United’s on-loan goalkeeper has been called up by La Roja boss Ricardo Garcea for his nation’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Brazil (11 October) and Colombia (15 October).

And while the 20-year-old is expecting to have a watching brief during both games, he is nevertheless determined to savour the experience.

“It’s special for my family because they’re all Chilean. It’s always been a dream of mine to represent their country,” said South Carolina-born Reyes, who has previously turned out for Chile at age-group level.

“Every time I step on the pitch for them and put on their shirt, it’s a great honour.

“Coming in as one of the young lads, my main approach is to live out the moment, get to know the coaching staff and learn from the older lads.

“I don’t think I’m going to play right away, but it’s going to be really good for me and my family.”

Reyes’ selection has also seen him move a step closer to emulating his boyhood hero Claudio Bravo, who was capped 150 times by Chile during a career that saw him play for the likes of Barcelona and Manchester City.

“I always watched Claudio Bravo. My father would always show me his clips when he transitioned to Spain,” Reyes added.

“I looked up to him because he was from my country and I always wanted to be the next Claudio Bravo.”
