U's striker backed to get back among the goals

Shaun Derry has given his full backing to Ben Williamson as the Cambridge United striker continues to endure a barren spell in front of goal.

The 28-year-old forward has failed to score in 28 appearances for the U’s so far this term.

But while U’s boss Derry admits that has been a big frustration, he praised the ethos and determination of Williamson as he bids to turn his fortunes around.

“I want to talk about him as a person rather than as a footballer first and foremost,” said Derry.

“A great guy, application, enthusiasm for training, relentless work-rate – that he manages to produce not just on a match day but training days as well – and he’s got the full respect of the whole football club for that.

“Sadly the differentiating factor for a centre forward is that you get judged on goals, and he knows that more than anybody.

“Unfortunately, that is the difference between an attacker and a defender – you only get judged on the goals that you score.

“The facts of the matter are that Ben’s not scored enough goals this year.

“He has to keep digging away, doing his extras and trying to stay focussed on that next game because he will be a goalscorer again.

“The worry for us is when will that next moment arrive for him? But he will score goals again and he has to take hope from that and a lot of confidence from that fact.”

Williamson puts in a huge shift for the team with his tireless running, and it sometimes feels as if he is just unfortunate not to be in the right place at the right time.

But Derry said: “I think goal scorers generally will pounce on one or two chances in a game.

“Ben had a chance in the first half with a header that came at 0-0 (in Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat to Doncaster Rovers) and on a different day that header will go in.

“So I wouldn’t say he’s not in and around the chances, I would just say that collectively – and this isn’t just aimed at Ben – especially on Tuesday night we weren’t ruthless enough with the chances we did get.”
