Shaun Jones was the maiden winner of the Cambridge Chesterton Open.

The event at Chesterton Indoor Bowls Club, sponsored by Peasgood & Skeates and St Andrew’s Road Garage, featured 64 competitors, including former world indoor champion Ellen Falkner and Mark Royal.

They were battling it out over the two-day competition for a top prize of £1,000, with a dynamic feeling to the new event.

It was played in a knockout format, with two sets of seven ends, and a three-end tie-break, if required.

Royal made it to the quarter-finals, while Falkner progressed to the semi-finals but was beaten 6-5, 2-8, 2-1 by Mark Sykes, a Banbury Cross bowler and former Oxfordshire county champion.

In the other semi-final, Jones, a former world under-25 bowls champion and current England player, defeated Brian Lees 6-5, 5-5.

Jones was victorious in the final, securing an 8-2, 9-4 triumph over Sykes.
