Shelford run riot to put Dorking to the sword
Impressive display at the Davey Field
A stunning start sowed the seed for Shelford to secure an impressive 57-24 win over Dorking in London & SE Premier Division.
Only three minutes were on the clock when Grant Anderson made a great offload to Simon Hrbek, who was then tap tackled but got the pass away to fly-half Josh Simmons to race through and score, and also convert.
Three minutes later, great quick play along the line saw Hrbek break free, and he had Anderson in support to race clear for Shelford’s second try, which Simmons also converted.
Anderson appeared to walk through water a minute later, ghosting past the Dorking defence to put in Charlie Parkhouse to touch down to make it 19-0.
Dorking finally got into the game after 12 minutes, with Ed Carne kicking a penalty.
But five minutes later, Shelford secured the four-try bonus point.
The hosts switched play from left to right and back again, and Michael Dunnett barged an opponent out of the way to get the try, which was converted by Simmons.
It was not long before Shelford got a fifth try, as a catch and drive from a line-out led to Luke Mongston grounding the ball over the line for 31-3.
The final say of the half went to Dorking, with hooker Sam Johnson finishing off some pressure on the line, and Carne converting for 31-10.
Parkhouse put in the foundation for Shelford’s first try of the second half, after 48 minutes, as his break was recycled for Mongston to then draw the last man to put in Al Whittaker to touch down, with Simmons converting.
It was 45-10 when some great ingenuity from Mike Gillick saw a pass behind his back for Parkhouse to run in his second try, and Simmons converted.
Dorking then started to mount a comeback as Carne danced his way through the Shelford defence to score, and then Oliver Rathbone broke clear in the 22 to touch down, and two conversions from Carne made it 45-24.
But more good work along the line in the 75th minute saw Mongston get his second try for Shelford and the game was wrapped up when Vuli Veikune burst through on the diagonal and then popped up a pass on the line for prop Matt Gregerson to touch down, with Simmons adding the extras.
