Eastern Counties lifted the Gill Burns Women’s County Championship, Division Two crown by beating Hampshire at Twickenham.

The squad featured six Shelford players, Fabia Howell, Rose Bradshaw, Chloe Houston, Millie Rose, Verena Zyka and Amy Chodorowski, and it was one try that split the teams in the 26-19 triumph.

The two scrum-halves, Hampshire’s Hannah Kemish and Eastern Counties’ Georgina Palmer, swapped quick-tap penalty tries.

Hampshire took the lead through Abi Harding’s score, after Hannah Wilson’s grubber kick, but Eastern Counties went in front when Claire Phelps grounded the ball under a penalty advantage to make it 14-12 at half time.

Tessa Down touched down to put Hampshire back in front after 60 minutes, but Sophia John burrowed over for a try to bring the score all square.

Thurrock’s John then got a second try from close range in the 70th minute to seal Eastern Counties’ win.

Captain Sam Willmott said: “It feels amazing, hard work but honestly amazing and definitely worth it. It’s such an amazing atmosphere here.

“It was a hard game and we were nervous, very back and forth and tight. At the end of it all, the hard work and graft paid off. I feel amazing now but through the game was very stressed especially in the last minute but feel a lot better for the win.”
