New season starts with defeat at the Davey Field

Shelford made a disappointing start to the new London & SE Premier season with a 37-5 home defeat to Sidcup.

There have been many changes at the Davey Field this summer, but their plans suffered a setback before the new campaign got underway as three players were ruled out with long-term injuries.

It was the Kent side that settled quicker though, racing into a 20-0 lead by half time.

Shelford’s only score came through an unconverted try in the last play of the game.

Head coach Mike Gillick tweeted after the game: “Tough day at the office for the @ShelfordRugby boys-lots of heart shown. Loads to work on but was nice to hear the crowd behind us despite the conditions, thank you! Cutting out the silly errors and the score line would have looked different. #peacockpride #keepfighting.”

Cantabrigian begin their London League 2NE campaign this Saturday (September 8), with a home game against Ipswich.
