Shelford toast double success
County cup victories for youth sides
Shelford savoured a county cup double as their under-14 and under-16 teams sealed Cambridgeshire success.
In the under-14 final, Shelford were up against Saffron Walden for the fourth time in five years in the last two.
Walden took the lead, but Will Rand’s score, converted by Harvey Taylor, levelled things.
But Walden had a 15-14 first-half lead despite Taylor scoring and converting his own try.
The lead was increased by Walden in the second half, but tries from Ryley Brown and Henry Porter-Clarke, both converted by Taylor, saw Shelford crowned county champions for the first time with a 28-20 win.
Jack Smith touched down twice for Shelford under-16s as they defeated Cambridge 34-19.
In a fast, physical and highly-competitive final, Shelford’s good defending led to them breaking away to score, and this was a theme for the match.
Shelford’s outstanding defence was key to their win as Smith got two tries and Walter Watson,Taylor Hein-Jones, Hamish Brewis and Jake Murdoch one apiece. Osian Williams kicked two conversions.
