New role for out-going Vice-Chancellor

Sir Leszek Borysiewicz will become the new president of Cambridge University Rugby Union Football Club.

The out-going Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge will take over from professor Mark Bailey, who has been CURUFC president for seven years.

During Bailey’s leadership, CURUFC has repositioned itself for the current highly-commercialised rugby environment, while another key milestone was the merger with the women’s club, which also saw the Women’s Varsity Match moved to Twickenham for the first time in 2015.

Bailey, who will continue as the chairman of the recently-launched Red Lion 150 fundraising campaign, said: “It has been a great honour for me to be president of CURUFC, and I would like to thank all the members and Old Blues for their support and especially those who have worked so hard to maintain the culture and purpose of the club.

“We now have the right foundations to build a bright future, and closer relations with the university are central to that future.

“I look forward to continuing in the service of this great club through the fundraising campaign, which will allow the players of tomorrow to benefit from CURUFC as we have all benefited.”

Professor Borysiewicz is a keen sportsman and supporter of the Light Blues, and will provisionally take on the role of president on January 1, 2018, subject to formal approval at the club’s AGM in the spring.

“I am looking forward to the continuing success of CURUFC, and in particular to collaborating with the university to develop the outstanding Grange Road facility,” said Sir Leszek.

“We want to allow new generations of students to enjoy the unique player experience that CURUFC has provided for almost 150 years.”
