Cambridge United midfielder Korey Smith makes instant impression during friendly victory over West Bromwich Albion
Head coach Garry Monk has backed new signing Korey Smith to have a big impact on the Cambridge United squad this season.
The midfielder, who was part of the Sky Bet League One promotion-winning group at Derby County last term, featured for the first time in U’s colours on Friday evening during the 1-0 pre-season friendly victory over a West Bromwich Albion XI.
And while he only featured for the opening 45 minutes before being replaced at the break, the 33-year-old made an instant impression at the Cledara Abbey Stadium.
There was a real composure about the way that Smith went about his business in the middle of the pitch, while he also showed his leadership qualities with a mixture of encouragement and strong words when required.
“You saw his quality on the ball and that’s a big reason for bringing him in and it’s the same with Gary Gardner, although we’ve not seen him yet – they’ve got similar characters,” said Monk.
“They bring that level of quality – which is the main thing – but then you’ve got all that experience and their voice.
“The leadership side of things is so important. You saw that tonight – it’s not just his performance, but how he also benefits the other players.
“We’re delighted to have him here and he’s going to help the younger ones especially. They’ll gain confidence from him and they’ll see what high demands look like.
“He’s really supportive of them, but there are times when you need to be straight with people and that’s important for everyone.”
