Andrew Grimwood and Adam Northfield were victorious in the Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union County Foursomes Championship.

Twenty-four pairs took to St Ives (Hunts) Golf Club, which proved to be a stern test for the county’s best golfers.

St Neots duo Grimwood and Northfield were the first round leaders after hitting a one-under-par 71, which included four birdies.

Only five pairs managed to break the 80 mark, and in second place were Nene Park’s Jeremy Baldwin and Gog Magog’s Richard Temple with 76, closely followed one shot behind by Ely City’s James McLaughlin and Isaac Rowlands, and county champion Ed Dimambro and George Howard.

Gog Magog’s Joe York and Jake Plumb were the main movers in the afternoon, adding 73 to their morning round of 79 to finish with 152, which claimed the runners-up spot.

Grimwood, who is having a memorable season having won the county fourball with Oliver Toyer and the January Cup at the county championship, and Northfield, the current holder of the John Durman Handicap Trophy, had no serious challenge to top spot, and fired 76 to finish with 147.

Dimambro and Howard took third on 153.

County stalwart Mbachi Knana, of Elton Furze, and Nene Park’s Allan Young won the best nett prize with a score of 152.
