Histon manager Chris Nunn bolsters midfield with signing Joe O’Neill from AFC Rushden & Diamonds

Histon manager Chris Nunn has bolstered his squad with the signing of Joe O’Neill.

The midfielder has arrived at Bridge Road from AFC Rushden & Diamonds, for whom he made 20 appearances in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Midlands Division (Step 4) last season.

Prior to linking up with the Diamonds in November 2023, the 24-year-old started out with Evesham United before going on to have spells with the likes of Barwell, Rugby Town, Quorn, Chasetown and Sutton Coldfield Town.

Speaking about his latest recruit, who helped Diamonds to win the Hillier Senior Cup in 2023/24 at the expense of Kettering Town, Nunn told the club’s website: “Joe is a cracking young lad who will strengthen our squad at this very busy time. I’m really looking forward to working with him.”

O’Neill is set to be in the Histon squad for this weekend’s GCE Hire Fleet United Counties Football League Premier Division South trip to bottom-of-the-table G.N.G Oadby Town.

And he is also available for next month’s FA Vase clash at Great Yarmouth Town after the Stutes ran out 4-1 winners in the previous round at Stowmarket Town on Saturday.

Nunn’s men fell behind early on at Greens Meadow but they responded with goals from captain Max York, Connor Barnes, Luke Young and substitute Marcus Cole.

Not only did the result secure Histon’s passage through to the next round of the nationwide competition, it also saw them gain some revenge on an opposition team that had knocked them out of the FA Cup earlier in the campaign.
