Top-scorer Emila Reinhardt and forward Isabella Gjergji score for Cambridge United Women under-18s in 2-1 win against She Can Play Panthers
Cambridge United Women under-18s produced their best performance of the season according to coach Sean Greygoose in a combative 2-1 win over She Can Play Panthers at Cambourne Village College on Saturday.
Two magnificent solo efforts from top-scorer Emila Reinhardt and forward Isabella Gjergji gave the young U’s all three points while they conceded after an uncharacteristic mistake by keeper Lily-Grace Cooke.
The result moves United into second place in the Junior Premier League, a point above rivals West Ham who had to surprisingly forfeit their game having not being able to raise a team, the London team albeit have two games in hand.
“We knew coming into the game it was going to be tough,” said Greygoose.
“She Can Play are a really well coached and physical side, have had some really good results this season and are at the top end of the league.
“The big thing for us was making sure we got a result as we have come off the back of a loss and a draw so we set the girls the challenge of gaining the win.
“I thought it was one of our best first half performances around the press and regains along with winning the physical battles.
“I think in fairness the attitude and desire from our girls took them by surprise. If we want to be super critical, we should have took more of our chances but the two goals were taken really well by Emilia and Isabella.
“I don’t think Lily had a save to make in the first half. The second was a bit of a non-event because our girls managed the game brilliant and were able to stay on the ball and have lots of possession.
“Again we were still able to create chances but also able to rotate and rest players.
“The only downside was She Can Play scoring with the last kick of the game which was a slight error but again something we will learn form.
“Although we won and it was a comfortable result, I was really pleased with how the girls acted and didn’t get involved during some moments with the opposition.”
United host Netherton United at Cambourne Village College on Saturday, 10.30am kick-off.
