Histon bow out of FA Cup at hands of hosting Stowmarket Town at Greens Meadow

Histon bowed out of the FA Cup at the first stage on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat at 10-man Stowmarket Town.

The visiting Stutes took the lead at Greens Meadow – and they also had a numerical advantage for the final 20 minutes – but they were unable to make either of those factors count as they exited the competition in the extra preliminary round.

Histon, who saw a two-goal advantage slip away the previous weekend in the GCE Hire Fleet United Counties Football League Premier Division South, broke the deadlock in the 24th minute thanks to Matty Allan’s finish.

However, hosting Stowmarket were level within five minutes via Magic Smalls’ free-kick from distance that caught out Histon goalkeeper Sam Roach.

Stowmarket lost the red carded Kal Benham midway through the second half, yet it was they that scored the tie’s decisive third goal when Reece Lanbridge applied the finishing touch from a corner.

Histon will go in search of their first victory of the new campaign on Saturday (10 August) when they travel to face Bugbrooke St Michaels in a league fixture, which is followed swiftly on Tuesday (13 August) by the visit of March Town United to Bridge Road.
