Histon aim to bounce back in FA Cup against Stowmarket Town after disappointing late draw with Northampton Sileby Rangers

For 89 minutes, Histon’s opening match of the new GCE Hire Fleet United Counties Football League season was going relatively well.

Danny Gould broke the deadlock just 14 seconds into the 2024/25 campaign and he scored another goal six minutes later to put the hosting Stutes in command early on against Northampton Sileby Rangers at Bridge Road.

And the scoreline remained 2-0 in Histon’s favour throughout a largely uneventful second half.

However, in the final minute of the 90, visiting substitute Nathan Burrows converted a chance from close range to halve the deficit and then within 120 seconds he had turned on the edge of the box and picked out the bottom corner to equalise.

It was a two-minute spell that left Histon stunned as they prepare to respond away at equivalent-level Stowmarket Town in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup on Saturday (3 August).

And captain Max York believes that the trip down the A14 will provide a ‘test of character’ for his team, who missed a handful of chances to make the game safe before being pegged back.

“Any time you drop points at home you’re going to be disappointed,” said the centre-back.

“We controlled the first half an hour or so but then we probably let ourselves down a little bit because we dropped off a bit too deep.

“We had chances (to make it 3-0) and we probably should have buried the game in the first half.

“Character is a big thing in football and you get to know people very quickly on the pitch, off the pitch and how they react within a game.

“The tide can turn quickly and if their two goals had come sooner, I don’t know how the game would have gone but it would have definitely tested our character even more.

“All we can do is look forward to next week and have a good week of training.

“It’s disappointing because we wanted more. Next week is going to be a test of character but ultimately I think the lads have got it in them to go again.”
