Tess Howard earns bronze with England at EuroHockey Junior Championships

Former The Perse School pupil gets podium spot

Tess Howard continued her brilliant hockey year by winning a bronze medal with England at the EuroHockey Junior Championships.

The 18-year-old former The Perse School student has made giant leaps in 2017, going from the under-18s squad in the spring to the under-21s this summer.

And that level of success continued at the showpiece tournament in Spain.

England had topped their group by winning all three games to set up a semi-final against Belgium, however, they were beaten 3-1.

It meant they faced Germany in a bronze medal play-off.

Erica Sanders gave England the lead in the first half, but Germany hit back in the second half to go 2-1 up with five minutes remaining.

But England kept their cool and Holly Munro equalised from a penalty corner a minute later.

And Burge completed the comeback two minutes from time with another goal from a penalty corner to seal the 3-2 victory for the bronze medal.

Coach Hannah Macleod, a former Cambridgeshire player who was part of the Team GB squad that won gold at the Rio Olympics, tweeted: “In keeping with tradition, this bunch have absolutely delivered under pressure. Very proud of the journey they’ve taken #QuickInMind.”
