Under-13 squads progress from regional finals

The Perse School’s junior running teams have reached the national finals of the English Schools Athletics Association Cross Country Cup.

In the regional finals at Lincroft Academy, the under-13 boys’ and girls’ teams were runners-up in their sections.

May Busher led the junior girls’ charge by finishing 12th, with Grace Bennett, Isabella Harvey and Freya Seal also in the top 20 as The Perse were runners-up to Dr Challoner’s High School. Natalie Ronco and Gracie Underwood also earned top half finishes.

Hugh Ponder was third in the junior boys’ race in 10min 47sec, with Alex Blake, Ned Halligan and George Christmas also inside the top 13. Alex Deacon and Finlay Ash completed the squad as The Perse finished second to Dr Challoner’s Grammar School.

The national finals are at Woodbridge School on November 24.

The Perse’s under-15 intermediate team were comprised entirely of Year 9 pupils in a Year 10 class, and the boys were sixth and the girls ninth.

Perse cross country coach Chris Ingram said: “It has been great to see both junior teams preparing for the final with some tough interval training after school this week in the dark and mud. This resilience, dedication and sheer grit is worthy of national finalists.”
