The Perse School clinch hockey double
Successes for under-13 and under-14 squads
There has been double delight for The Perse School hockey teams.
The under-14 boys’ side savoured success in the regional qualifying tournament to earn a place at the East finals of the England Schools Championships.
In the round-robin competition, they beat Bedford Modern 8-0, Langley School 4-0 and Merchant Taylors’ School 3-0 to set up a winner-takes-all clash with Ipswich School to decide the pool victors.
It was captain Charlie Underwood that had the definitive say, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win to see the Perse progress to the regional finals.
Perse head of hockey Jon Peckett said: “Everyone pulled together and the whole team played really well throughout. The boys deserved to go through to the East finals.”
The under-13 boys’ team have been crowned Cambridgeshire champions.
Two goals apiece from Dominic Collinson, Jack Moffat and Toby London, and one each from Austin Wang, Yujian Zou, Alex Cross and Newby Lilley earned them a 10-0 win over Joyce Frankland Academy Newport.
Wang scored twice and London and Zou were also on target in a 4-0 victory over St John’s School as the Perse topped their pool.
It was a hat-trick from Wang that earned them a 3-1 semi-final win over St Faith’s School, and they defeated St John’s School again in the final to be crowned county champions, Collinson and Zou getting two goals each and London and Moffat one apiece in a 6-0 win.
Team coach Redvers Wilbur said: “The boys were brilliant all afternoon, scoring lots of superb goals and playing really well together as a team.
“Perhaps most impressive was the way they worked hard for each other and showed great character when it mattered, notably coming back from being 1-0 down to St Faith’s at half time in the semi-final. Overall, I’m very proud of the way they played.”
They now go on to the East finals of the England Schools In2Hockey Championships.
