The Perse School girls' hockey teams seal regional successes
Outstanding performances from The Perse Scholl under-12 and under-14 girls’ hockey teams has seen them achieve regional success in their respective age group competitions.
The under-12s added the East title to their county crown after winning all seven matches in their tournament at Redbridge.
They topped their group with wins over Colfe’s School (3-0), Haileybury (1-0) and Bedford Girls’ School (1-0). Maia Polonius(three) and Willow Wallman (two) scored the goals.
The team beat Stamford School 3-0 thanks to Wallman, Verity Valentine and Polonius, to secure a spot in the pool to decide the top four places.
Wallman’s goal led to The Perse beating Sevenoaks School 1-0 and a 3-1 win over Queenswood followed with Polonius, Rosabel Clarke and Wallman all on target.
Wallman secured regional honours for the team with the only goal in a 1-0 success against St Faith’s School.
Coach Nicky Bareham said: “The attitude and determination of the girls was superb and they should be immensely proud of what they have achieved.”
Fresh from a training session with Great Britain international and former Perse student Tess Howard, the under-14s secured their place in the East finals of the national schools championships after qualifying from the regional round at Bedford.
They got off to a fine start with a 4-2 win over Norwich High School with doubles from Hannah Scotland and May Busher.
Charlotte Rye and Busher netted in a 2-1 victory against Sevenoaks, and a 3-0 success over Queenswood followed with Busher (2) and Ellena Izzard on target. Stamford were beaten 8-0, with Holly Smith and Busher both scoring twice and Rye, Izzard, Grace Bennett and Gabriella Zailer-Fletcher claiming one apiece.
The Perse then drew 1-1 draw against Ipswich School thanks to a late equaliser from Busher to secure their place at the finals.
