Cambridge United set to have George Thomas available for Peterborough United derby encounter
Cambridge United are set to be boosted by the return of George Thomas for Saturday’s crucial Sky Bet League One derby clash against Peterborough United at the Abbey Stadium.
The attacking midfielder joined the U’s on transfer deadline back in January but made just one appearance as a substitute before picking up an ankle injury in training that was feared to have ended his season.
However, the 26-year-old has defied the initial prognosis and he could now feature for Cambridge during their final six games.
Head coach Mark Bonner said: “George is training flat out now and he’s probably going to be available for selection this weekend, assuming he does ok in the next couple of days.”
In further positive news, midfielder Liam O’Neil is also closing in on a return to action.
O’Neil has had a stop-start campaign on the injury front, but he has made good progress in recent weeks.
Bonner added: “Liam had his first session on the grass with the rest of the squad on Tuesday and he’ll have a couple more days – even though they’ll be a little bit lighter (before the game).
“He’s maybe a little bit further behind (Thomas) in terms of training, but again, as long as things go well with him he’ll be added to the squad (soon) as well.”
One player that will not feature against Peterborough is full-back George Williams, who is set to be sidelined for at least another two weeks with a knee injury.
Bonner also confirmed that late checks will be made on a couple of other players that picked up knocks during Monday’s 1-1 draw at Bolton Wanderers.
