Cambridge United anticipating stern test from Sky Bet League One trip to second-from-bottom Morecambe
Cambridge United’s assistant head coach Gary Waddock is expecting nothing but a ‘tough’ afternoon from Saturday’s trip to Morecambe.
The Shrimps have won just one of their opening nine Sky Bet League One fixtures this season – a sequence of results that leaves them sitting second from bottom in the standings.
United have also won on both of their last two trips to the Mazuma Stadium, yet Waddock believes it is only a matter of time before Derek Adams’ team click into gear.
“Every game is different and the games when we’ve gone up there in recent years, that’s history,” he said.
“It’s going to be a tough game for us. They’ve got a good group of players and some real threats in their frontline.
“The manager knows the level, he’s a good manager and an experienced manager so it’s going to be tough.
“People will say they’ve had a slow start but at some point they will get it going and hopefully it’s not this Saturday.”
One player that is yet to hit his straps for Morecambe this term is Cole Stockton.
The forward scored 26 goals in all competitions throughout 2021/22 but he is still awaiting his first of the current campaign.
Waddock added: “We know what a good player he is, his record speaks for itself.
“(Kieran) Phillips alongside him has done well and they’ve got a decent young player in the middle of the park – Jensen (Weir, former United loanee) – and he’ll want to do well against us.
“It’s going to be a tough encounter but one we’re looking forward to.”
The U’s will make the trip north aiming to pick up a first victory on their travels this campaign.
They currently sit bottom of League One’s away form table with a solitary point to their name – and that is something Waddock is keen to put right as soon as possible.
“We’ve started well, obviously our home form has been good. We’ve picked up some points and performances there, but we’d like to have done better on the road,” he said.
“The home fans have been excellent for us and it’s helped us get those results.
“We’ve been pleased with that but we’d like to pick up a few points on the road.”
