Cambridge United’s options for the visit of Port Vale on Saturday (February 9) could be set for a boost.

Reggie Lambe has been back in training for the past week, and he was joined on the training ground by Jabo Ibehre and keeper David Forde on Thursday.

Liam O’Neil is the only player still not fully fit after his hip strain, but head coach Colin Calderwood will have a strong hand to play with loanees Hayden Coulson and Jake Doyle-Hayes also in contention for a place.

“Liam has been a frustrating one not only for himself but for everyone at the club,” said the head coach.

“We’ve had to take him out of anything for a fortnight to let it settle down and then we will have to build him back up.

“This is a fortnight of really limited action just to let his body and everything come back together as best as possible and then gradually introduce him again.

“He has jarred up all round his hip area. He came in and played some games fairly quickly after a period out, and it’s not the condition of the pitch, it’s just the nature of pitches at that time was a load that his body didn’t cope with.

“It’s not been helpful but with Reggie, Jabo and Davide Forde all getting closer to returning; the two new boys, Hayden and Jake, being in the building as well, my choices are more and I think the strength of the bench and squad is deeper.”
