Sawston & Babraham settle for East Anglian Premier League draw against Swardeston ahead of Sudbury encounter

Thurlow Nunn East Anglian Premier League table toppers Sawston & Babraham (272-5 declared) picked up 13 points from their rain-affected draw with visiting Swardeston last weekend.

After losing the toss and being inserted into bat, Rams captain Callum Guest top scored with his knock of 88 runs from a total of 122 deliveries.

Nikhil Gorantla (66) and Ben Claydon (51) also scored half centuries while all-rounder Jack Beaumont contributed a run-a-ball 45 to the tally.

But with the rain clouds descending over the Spicers Sports Ground, Guest took the decision to declare after 58.2 overs.

Yet with the inclement weather in Cambridgeshire showing no signs of abating, the contest was declared a draw by the umpires without the visitors having to come out to bat in reply.

With second-placed Sudbury also picking up 13 points from their draw away at neighbouring Bury St Edmunds, defending champions Sawston & Babraham remain 12 clear at the summit.

And Sawston & Babraham will have the opportunity to stretch their advantage when the two sides lock horns at Sudbury’s Friars Street on Saturday (14 June) in an early top-of-the-table clash.
